2009 SU Belgrade Update: Start of Expedition ‘Everest 2009’

10 April 2009

Members of the ‘Everest 2009′ team completed their team in Kathmandu and, as soon as they get the permit from the Chinese government, they will cross over to Tibet and start their climb to the top of the world, carrying the Universiade flag that is to be used at the Opening Ceremony of this sports event in Belgrade in July.

The head of the expedition, Dragan Jaćimović, is keeping a dairy and you can read his entries at www.extremesummitteam.com.

‘We are using the time left to prepare our equipment for the base camp. There is a lot of work to be done. It is not an easy matter to pack two truckloads of equipment, especially because we have to make lists of all our requirements in advance because once we reach the mountain there are no shops or super markets to buy what we need’, Dragan Jaćimović wrote.

In Nepal he came by some interesting information about their upcoming climb.

‘I received interesting information about the Everest. Last winter there was less snow than usual and the dry season started early this year so that there is hardly any snow on the Everest! The South flank is without snow, the climb towards Balkoni also. Lotse is sheer rock in the upper part! Not even the oldest Nepalese remember that this has happened before. It seems that global warming is taking its toll’, the expedition leader Dragan Jaćimović wrote in his Internet diary.
