2009 SU Update: Belgium Announces its Athletes

Today, at a press conference, the Belgian University Sport Federation (BUSF) announced its athletes for the 2009 Summer Universiade. The 46-person delegation will bring some athletes to watch out for. The Belgians will only participate in individual sports due to budget restrictions, but the athletes they will bring will be an experienced lot. The Belgian athletes will participate in archery, athletics, judo, gymnastics and fencing. Star of the team is without doubt track & field athlete Hanna Mariën, bronze medalist at the 2007 SU in Bangkok and Olympic silver medalist in Bejing and for sure a contender in Belgrade. Another contender is gymnast Donna Donny Truyens, 1st at the World Cup in Maribor and Cottbus and 3rd in Montréal on the pommel horse. In Archery the archers to watch are Mathieu Vandepoele, who won bronze at the 2008 WUC Archery team & individual compound as well as Julien Depoitier and Grégory Aerts, bronze at the 2008 WUC Archery team- compound and Czhteline Dessoy, who won compound team gold at the 2007 FITA World Championship. In judo all hopes are on Laure Aerts and Charline Van Snick and in fencing to Delphine Groslambert who won gold a the 2008 World Cup.
