The competitions of the 25th Summer Universiade are halfway. A perfect opportunity to have a closer look at the medal table so far.
If we take the number of gold medals as a point of reference, then Korea takes the lead with 11 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. The Koreans amassed no less than 15 medals in Taekwondo, the national Korean sport. Second in line is China with 8 gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze. The Chinese dominate the Artistic Gymnastics competition and are strong medal winners in diving and fencing as well. In third place is Japan, making Asia a dominant force on the medal table of this Universiade. Four gold, two silver and six bronze totals 12 medals for Team Nippon so far. Medals that were mainly won in artistic gymnastics and swimming.
The top three are followed by the USA (3 gold, 3 silver & 4 bronze) and Iran (3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) to close the top five of the gold medals.
If the number of medals is taken into account for the table ranking than China takes the lead with 31 medals, followed by Korea (21) and the Russian Federation with 17 medals. Italy and Japan close the top five with 14 and 12 respectively.
