Brasil Wins Tennis Tournament at 2010 South American University Games

The final of the tennis tournament of the III South American University Games played yesterday, April 21st, at Graciosa Country Club, in Curitiba (PR) was a Brazilian summit.

Valter Mori and Luis Deneka, students from Curitiba and representatives of Brazil at the Games, faced each other in the tennis final. Mori beat Luis Deneka by scoring 7/6 and 6/2. “It was a final between two Brazilian friends. I practice with Luis, we already faced eachother several times and it´s always a difficult game. I’m happy to win my first international title in university category playing in my town with the support of family and friends”, said Valter Mori, who remains undefeated in the national university tournament.

To reach the finals of the tennis tournament, the Brazilian student-athletes played against Chileans Carlos Javier and Alejandro Ibañes at the semifinals. Valter beat Ibañes by a score of 6/0 and 6/2. Luis Deneka needed two hours of play and a tie-brake to score 2-1 against Alejandro Javier (partial 6/0, 5/7 and 13/11).

In the final classification of the tennis tournament (performance in singles and doubles) of the 2010 South American University Games, Brazil took 1st place, followed by Chile and Colombia.

The III South American University Games are hosted in Curitiba in the following disciplines: men’s soccer, men’s volleyball and men’s tennis. The tournament is being organized by the South American Sports University Confederation (COSUD) with the support of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU), the Parana government and University Sports Federation (FPDU).
