Shenzhen – Today, May 13th, the Supervision Committee for the Summer Universiade met to listen to the update of the different departments of the Organizing Committee.
Venue Department
The Shenzhen Government will provide 68 venues, 44 for competition and 22 for training, plus two as back-up venues. 27 of the venues are located in the Longgang District, 7 in the Bao An District, 13 in the Nanshan District, 13 in the Futian District, 3 in the Luohu District, 3 in the Yantian District, 1 in the Pingshan District and also 1 in the Guangming District. About 38 % of the venues are located in the Longgang District, close to the Universiade Center and Athletes’ Village. 22 of the venues are brand new and under construction. All new venues will be finished by the end of this year. 34 venues are being renovated for the Games, whereas most renovation work will be finished for December 2010, a small number of the renovation projects will be completed by March 2011. Ten temporary venues will be built as well. They will be ready one month prior to the Universiade.
Athletes’ Village
The Village is located southwest to the central Longgang District and north to the Universiade Venue Center. The Village covers an area of 492,000 m², with a total construction area of circa 478,000 m². It stretches out more than 1 km from east to west and is nearly 800 m wide from north to south. The Village will accommodate about 13,000 athletes and officials from over 180 countries. All facilities will hand over to the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology after the Games. The main structure of the Village was completed on January 8th. By the end of October, the interior decorations will be accomplished and the fixture of water and electricity completed. All functional areas will have trial runs from March to June 2011.
Security
15 security master plans and hundreds of specific operational programs have been drawn up and will be further tested by a series of test events. An accreditation card reader machine, X-ray and walk-through devices will be installed to check entries and exits at all times. At the Shenzhen municipal level, ten special duty teams have been set up to deal with terrorist threats. On August 12th, 2010, a one-year countdown full-dress rehearsal will be carried out to test all stakeholders in their readiness for the Games operation and onsite communication.
Logistics
Transportation, catering, hotel accommodation and medical operations were explained. A new 5-star Hotel for the media is being built near the Universiade Center and the Main Media Center. The FISU Family will be accommodated in the Wuzhou Guest House.
Volunteer Recruitment
A special logo and slogan was designed for the volunteers. The logo depicts the graphical letters ‘V’ (Volunteer) – ‘U’ (Universiade) – ‘S’ (Shenzhen), whereas the slogan reads ‘I’m Here’ which echoes with the Universiade slogan ‘Start Here’. The objective of the program is to have qualified volunteers who provide high-level services to the participants. So far 50,000 persons have registered to become a volunteer for the Universiade.
Protocol
The OC invited designers to come forward with a medal design proposal which will be presented to the FISU EC.
Broadcasting
Host broadcaster for the Shenzhen Universiade will be the prominent local TV broadcaster Shenzhen Media Group (SZMG). The host broadcaster will cover the 2010 WUC Archery in Shenzhen as a test event. During the Games, 15 to 18 Outdoor Broadcast Units for Live Coverage will be used as well as 6 to 25 cameras per sport, depending on the discipline. On a daily basis news (12x2x2’30”) and highlights (12x26x2’) will be produced. A number of ‘beauty cameras’ will be installed to provide city views during the Games as well, i.e. in the Main Stadium, on ShenNan Blvd., on Shenzhen Bay Bridge, in the Universiade Village, on the SZMG building.
Tomorrow, May 14th, the FISU Executive Committee will starts its two-days meeting.
