KOPER – Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) organised the Summer Festival of Student Sport – Slovenian University Sports Games in Koper on May 28th, 2010. The full-day event, organised in the vicinity of the Mediterranean Sea this year gathered about 150 students from Slovenia, competing in volleyball, basketball, futsal as team sports and in tennis as individual sport.
At the opening ceremony, the President of Slovenian University Sports Association and the Executive Member of the European University Sports Association, prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik welcomed all the participants, congratulated them in successfully combining sports and their higher education studies, and wished them sports luck in their competitions.
This year, the students of the University of Ljubljana won most titles of national university champions in the academic year 2009/2010. The University of Ljubljana was also awarded by EUSA as the most successful European university in the field of sports achievements in 2009 and in the period 1999-2009. The awards and medals were presented by representatives of SUSA, University of Primorska and the local student organisation.
The national university championships in Slovenia also serve as qualifications for participation of Slovenian student athletes in the international student sport events, especially for the European Universities Championships, International University Championships and Universiades – the winners are given the chance to compete in these events.
SUSA organises national university championships in 15 sports: Alpine skiing, snowboarding, savate, orienteering, sports shooting, rowing, golf, basketball, volleyball, futsal, tennis, table tennis, badminton, beach volleyball, triathlon. Many of these are included in the summer and winter festivals of student sports.
