2010 WUC Golf Update : Technical Meeting & Opening Ceremony

The delegations at the Opening Ceremony

ANTEQUERA – Yesterday, June 7th, the new appointed FISU Technical Chair for Golf Ray Robinson had the occasion to lead his first technical meeting. He succeeded marvelously. Leonz Eder, FISU Assessor and CISCA Chair for this event welcomed the Heads of Delegation to the meeting and thanked the Organizing Committee for its excellent preparatory work. Pedro Montiel, the President of the OC explained in detail all WUC matters as well as the Opening Ceremony and the transportation. Mr. Robinson spoke about the technicalities of the tournament. At the end of the meeting Mr. Montiel offered a typical souvenir from the region to each Head of Delegation.

In the evening the Opening Ceremony took place at the beautiful setting of the Antequera Golf Course with a record number of 21 delegations marching in front of the full bleachers.

In her speech, Mrs. Adelaida De La Calle, Rector of the University of Málaga stressed the importance of university sport as well as the organization of this kind of event which brings experience to the student-athletes but also to the University. The mayor of the city stressed the importance of this sporting event for the city of Antequera. The WUC Golf is part of the festivities to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the re-affiliation of Antequera to the Kingdom of Spain. He also reminded of the importance of sport for the development of the youth.

CISCA Chair Leonz Eder thanked the Spanish NUSF CEDU for its dynamism. He reminded the attendants of the number of FISU events Spain has hosted in the past and stressed that Spain is strongly linked with FISU’s future as well with the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada. At the end of his speech, Mr. Eder also thanked the volunteers for their hard work.

After the ceremonial part the delegations very much appreciated the cultural spectacle with music and dances from the region.
