BRASIL – From August 09th to 15th, Brazil will receive the best of university basketball in the Americas. The Pan-American University Basketball Championships, sponsored by the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU), will bring together teams from South, North and Central America.
The city of Salvador, capital of Bahia, will host the premiere edition of the Pan-American University Basketball Championship that already has confirmed the attendance of selections from Brazil, United States, Canada, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay. There are two more vacancies remaining to complete the tournament’s entry.
CBDU also partnered with the channel SporTV that will make the live broadcast of the decisive matches of the Pan-American Basketball, giving even more visibility for the category and the teams.
“One of CBDU’s concerns is to contribute to the development of university sports in the Americas, especially South America, Central America and the Caribbean. Therefore, we invested in achieving the South American Games in Curitiba in 2008 and 2010, and the World University Futsal Championship in 2008, and we will promote also the World University Championship of Beach Volleyball and Handball in 2012 and bid to host the Universíade in 2019. Projects and actions aimed at strengthening university sport disseminate and consolidate the work of FISU on the continent and facilitate the participation of the American countries in international high-level tournaments”, said Luciano Cabral, CBDU President and FISU Vice-President
The Pan-American University Basketball Championship will bring together some of the top athletes of basketball’s new generation. They are young players (up to 24 years) who played in national leagues such as New Brasil Basketball (NBB), NCAA, etc., and names that will certainly pop up the coming seasons on the teal rosters of the NBA and in World Championships, Olympic Games and the Universiade.
The United States will participate in the Pan-American Basketball event in Salvador with a selection of the NCAA, the major university league in the world. Brazil, led by coach Walter Roose, will also have its top university players. CBDU and Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) signed an agreement to form a team already thinking of potential athletes for the Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
“The Pan American University Basketball Championship is part of this project and this way, CBDU will contribute to the development of university sports and FISU work”, concluded Luciano Cabral.
