TOOWOOMBA – Toowoomba accommodation providers will experience great winter occupancy rates in early July as over 650 students from 11 tertiary institutions in Queensland, Northern Territory and Samoa descend on the city to compete in the 2010 Northern University Games (NUG).
With them come up to 300 team managers, officials, staff and event management volunteers, bringing total number of participants in the event to close to 1,000.
“We are very excited to be bringing the Games back to Toowoomba. The NUG is growing in popularity each year and it is great to see so many students travelling to Toowoomba to compete in this multi-sport event” said Paul Sutcliffe, 2010 Northern University Games project manager.
“With so many visitors in town the Games are sure to make an impact on the local community, both in terms of an injection to the economy, and engagement with locals through our volunteer program” Mr Sutcliffe added. “We even have an international flavour to the event with a mixed netball team from Samoa travelling to take part.”
The event, supported by Australian University Sport, Toowoomba Regional Council and the University of Southern Queensland will cover 10 sports including basketball, football, golf, lawn bowls, netball, rugby league 7’s, tenpin bowling, tennis (singles), touch and volleyball and is held concurrently with the Eastern University Games in Coffs Harbour and the Southern University Games in Bendigo.
