MELBOURNE – Dynamic Hong Kong, China brother/ sister duo Leo and Annie Au’s dream of becoming the first siblings to make the final round of the World University Squash Championships came to an end yesterday, with Leo bowing out in the semi-finals.
21 year old Annie, a student at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, had more luck than her younger brother, beating Great Britain’s Kirsty McPhee (11-5, 11-2, 11-2). Currently ranked 15th in the world, Au is considered the hot favourite to take out the women’s championship and appears to be on form, enjoying easy victories in the first two rounds of the tournament. A world university title would be a welcome addition to Au’s rapidly expanding trophy cabinet. She recently took out the Des Pyramides Open in France- her seventh WISPA world tour title.
For younger brother Leo, earning a finals berth was always going to prove a harder task. The 20 year old, who represents the same university as his sister, last night played off against the tournament’s first seed, Joel Hinds of Great Britain. Following a hard fought 3-2 quarter final victory against Canada’s Colin West, Au was defeated (13-11, 11-8, 11-6) by Hinds in a thrilling match. Hinds is ranked 101 in the world and is the favorite to take out the men’s title.
