PORTO – Portugal is the new men’s University Champion of the World in Rugby Sevens. Spain conquered the women’s title.
3,500 people cheered the new University World Champion of Rugby Sevens. Portugal defeated the Russian University team 35-17 with the support of the Portuguese crowd who came from everywhere to see the Final of the 4th World University Championship Rugby Sevens.
The happiness was visible on the face of Pedro Leal, Portugal team captain: “it’s amazing the emotion of playing with the crowd screaming for us”.
In the end, Tomaz Morais, coach of the Portuguese University Team, revealed that Portugal “is very big and the organization of this Championship proves it”.
The Spanish women’s team became the new World University Champion after they beat the Russians 17-10. “This is the result of many team efforts during this year”, said the team captain.
The Plate Cup went to the Italian Women’s Team and the Ukraine won the Bowl Cup. In the men’s competition, the Japanese team won the Plate Cup and Morocco won the Bowl Cup.
The Championship finished with the passage of the FISU Flag to the next host of the 5th World University Championship which is in France in 2012.
