TOKYO – Today, August 7th, the medal games were played at the 5th World University Baseball Championship in Tokyo, Japan. Cuba beat Team USA in the gold medal game, while host Japan overpowered rival Korea to win the bronze.
Bronze Medal Game – Japan vs. Korea: 9-0
Ito of Japan hit a two run homer in the 1st inning and added a run in the 2nd by a timely hit of Ishimine. Hasegawa hit a bases-cleaning double in the 4th inning when Japan scored 6 runs in total. Starting pitcher Hasegawa horse-collared Korea by striking out 10 batters till the 5th inning and the next pitchers on the hill also kept Korea scoreless.
Gold Medal Game – Cuba vs. USA: 4-3
The game was a pitching duel between González of Cuba and Cole of USA until the 7th inning with both teams remained horse-collar. Maggi of Team USA tie breaking homer in the top of the 8th which was tied by a solo homer of Despaigne against reliever, Noe Ramirez. Cuba was prevented from winning by reliever Nick Ramirez and the game went into extra innings for the 3rd time of this Championship. In 10th inning, USA scored a run during double play and added a run by a timely safe hit. However, Despaigne of Cuba smashed a come-from-behind 3 run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning bringing dramatic Gold medal victory for Cuba.
After the Gold Medal game, the victory and closing ceremony was held and the FISU Flag was handed over to Chinese Taipei, the next host of the 6th edition of this FISU event in 2012.
