SANTO DOMINGO – Today, the rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Franklin García Fermín, highlighted the hosting of the country’s XIII Central American and Caribbean University Games which will gather more than 1,000 athletes from 25 countries from October 1st and 10th, 2010. García Fermín welcomed the support given to the event by institutions such as the Ministry of Sports (Miderec), the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), the national sports federations and the Dominican National Brewery (CND).
“These Games, which will be organized in our country for the third time, will contribute to the complete and athletic education of thousands of student-athletes of the Central American and the Caribbean region”, stated the UASD rector in a press conference. The academician explained that the tournaments comprised competitions in athletics, chess, basketball, volleyball, taekwondo, karate, football, futsal, beach volleyball, tennis and table tennis. “Most of the competitions will be played in the UASD sports venues as well as in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center and East Park”, added García Fermín, who stressed on the participation of almost 20 Dominican universities in the structuring of the different teams that will represent the country. He also emphasized that, during the Games, an international forum will gather more than 60 rectors from Central American and Caribbean universities who will discuss on the sports policy in the region and their plans of expansion and development. “We hope to run successful and amazing Games in keeping with all the efforts put in by all of those who have been collaborating to making it a great hit, especially the members of the Organizing Committee as well as the Dominican athletes and those who have offered their economic and logistical support to its ”, informed García Fermín.
The UASD Rector was accompanied, among others, by Sotero Vásquez, President of the Organization for University Sports in Central America and the Caribbean (ODUCC), Julio Gómez, Director General of the Games as well as Víctor de la Rosa (Pululo),Technical Director. Vásquez and Gómez emphasized the start of the qualifications in basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, football and futsal, and informed that next Saturday, karate and taekwondo qualifications would begin in the UASD sports complex.
