TAIPEI CITY – The finals of the 11th World University Badminton Championship were played today, 12th September 2010. Both the titles of women’s singles and women’s doubles went to CHN. The host TPE won the titles of mixed doubles, men’s singles, and men’s doubles, becoming the biggest winner in this splendid event.
In the final of the mixed doubles, Hung-Ling Chen and Pei-Chen Hsieh took the lead throughout the game. They defeated the Chinese pair Haitao Huang-Shu Cheng 21-11, 21-19, winning the first title for TPE in this championship. In the court 2, Yuta Yamasaki-Midori Sakurai also beat the GBR in straight games 21-14, 21-12.
The final of the women’s singles was played by the 3rd seed Xuerui Li and the 8th seed Xin Liu. Li defeated her partner Liu 21-12, 21-14 and won the title. JPN Sayaka Sato placed the third since TPE Shao-Chieh Cheng abandoned the match due to her injury.
In the final of the men’s singles, Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto beat TPE Hsuan-Yi Hsueh 21-18 in the first game. In the second game, both players played remarkably and tied almost at every stage. But Hsuan-Yi Hsueh performed several strong smashes thus turned the table on Sugiarto 21-16, 21-14, grabbing the second title for TPE after a 75-munite-struggle. KOR Jong Soo Hwa ranked the third for Wan Ho Shon gave up the match due to his injury.
The final of the women’s doubles featured two Chinese pairs Xin Liu-Xuerui Li and Jin Ma-Shu Cheng. However, Liu got an injury in the previous matches and could not play in the final. Therefore, the champion went to the top seed Jin Ma-Shu Cheng. Xin Liu-Xuerui Li received the silver medals. KOR Da Hye Lee-Ye Na Jang finished JPN Midori Sakurai-Yumiko Nishiyama 21-16, 21-9 and got the bronze medals.
In the men’s doubles, Polish pair Hubert Peczek-Wojciech Szkudlarczyk claimed the third place for the 2nd seeds Hung-Lin Chen- Yu Lang Lin also gave up the match because of injury. They are the only European medallists in this championship.
FISU Assessor Mrs. Odell at the Closing Ceremony The final of the men’s doubles was no doubt a tough match. TPE Chieh-Ming Fang-Sheng-Mu Lee won the first game 21-16 against THA Bodin Isara-Maneepong Jongjit. Although THA made some mistakes in the second game, they soon went back to their best and tied with TPE 19-19 and won by 21-19. In the decider, THA controlled the game at first but TPE would not give up, caught up and reached 11-10. At the end of the match, THA smashed the shuttle onto the net, surrendering the champion to TPE 15-21.
There were numerous spectators coming into the gym to enjoy the finals. When Fang and Lee won the championship title of men’s doubles, their supporters in the hall gave them a round of applause enthusiastically. The Awarding and Closing Ceremony were held right after the final, making a perfect end of the 11th World University Badminton Championship.
The finals were followed by the Awarding Ceremonies. Then the Closing Ceremony took place at the Taipei Sports Office Hall. The Closing Ceremony started unusually by the cultural performance followed by the Chinese Taipei anthem. After the anthem representative of the Organizing Committee Kunning Chen and representative of the FISU Executive Committee Mrs. Alison Odell said their closing speeches. Mrs Odell thanked all organizers for their effort within the organizations of the 11th World University Badminton Championship. This memorable moment was according and following the FISU protocol. FISU anthem was played; flags went from the hand of the Organizing Committee through the FISU representative to the hand of representatives of the Gwangju 2012 Organizing Committee of the 12th World University Badminton Championship.
The Organizing Committee with the Taipei City representative and CTUSF prepared for all participants a farewell banquet. During the banquet the video of the WUC Badminton was played with all remarkable and memorable performances and moments. All athletes enjoyed this moment.
