BLUMENAU – The mayor of Blumenau (SC), João Paulo Kleinübing, received the board of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU) on Monday, November 8th, to formalize details and set a date for the 2012 World University Handball Championship.
Luciano Cabral, President of CBDU, thanked the mayor and highlighted the initiative and interest of the municipal administration of Blumenau in hosting an international tournament of university sport. “We know the capacity and structure of Blumenau in hosting major events and certainly the World University Handball Championship will be an achievement of success”, said Luciano Cabral.
The following people also attended the meeting: the president of the Municipal Foundation for Sport (FMD), Sergio Galdino; Edinilton Vasconcelos, CBDU technical director, Roberto Maldonado, Chief Financial Officer; Alessandro Gomes, manager of events, and Ricardo Souza, technical advisor and coordinator of handball.
The initial idea is that the 2012 World University Handball Championship should be held between July and September, preferably in the second half of August, which coincides with the events of the city’s anniversary. And the structure of the event (venues, accommodation, dining and CCO) should focus on the German Village area, facilitating logistics and public participation.
In July, Ricardo Souza (CBDU) and Andre Brunch, government representative of Blumenau, accompanied the Brazilian delegation at the World Handball Championship 2010 in Hungary and attended meetings with Frantisek Taborsky, FISU Technical Chair for Handball, and Michal Buchel, FISU Sports Manager.
“We want to put Blumenau on the international calendar of major sporting events and to host the Brazilian University Games twice, an event that involves over 3,000 people, and also be a candidate to host the World Women’s Handball Championship in 2011, making us even better to receive the university athletes from all over the world”, said Sergio Galdino.
