Opening Ceremony

BLUMENAU – A party of sound, rhythm and bright lights marked the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Brazilian University Games in Blumenau. The choreography of group Millennium and the vibrant music of group ‘Cavalinho’ enthused the student-athletes and the public attending to the Gymnasium Galegão, on November 05^th. More than 3,000 athletes are in the city for the tournament in eight sports: handball, volleyball, basketball, futsal, judo, table tennis, chess and swimming (male and female).

Luciano Cabral“It’s always a pleasure to be in the city of Blumenau. One of the cities that is a big supporter of university sport, which this year will once again receive the Brazilian University Games and will host the 2012 World University Handball Championship. I thank the city, the volunteers, referees, coaches, athletes, institutions of university education and, mainly, the state university federations that promote university sport in the states. I thank all the partners who believe and invest in this event because the sports future is at school and at university and these games promote this union and this interaction between sports and education and also is a platform for Olympic talents”, said Luciano Cabral, President of Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU) and FISU Vice-President, at the Opening Ceremony.

During the first part of the Brazilian University Games, from November 05^th to 10^th, the team sports were disputed. Teams from all over the country (27 states) started the games. 13 states went to the finals. Olympic athletes such as Aline Pará and Leo Bortolini, that played for the Brazilian handball selection in Athenas 2004, and at the World University Championships, as Valéria, Vanessa, Jessica and Patricia, winners of the 2010 WUC Futsal in Serbia, and Juliana Pilão, who played at the 2009 Universiade in Belgrade for the Brazilian volleyball team, are some of the big names in these 2010 Brazilian University Games.
