São Paulo wins 2010 Brazilian University Games

BLUMENAU – São Paulo’s state delegation is the champion of 2010 Brazilian University Games 2010, realized in the city of Blumenau, from November 5^th to 14^th. This is the fifth consecutive title of São Paulo that made 336 points in individual and collective competitions. Santa Catarina took second place overall with 333 points and Pernambuco completed the podium with 249 points. The presidents and representatives of the University Sports Federations received their trophies at the end of the competitions.

For nine days the city of Blumenau welcomed about 3,000 athletes to compete in eight sports: athletics, basketball, futsal, handball, judo, swimming, volleyball and chess. Participating in the tournament were athletes from 192 universities of all the 26 Brazilian’s states and the Federal District.

The event was attended by athletes who participated in Olympic Games, Universiades, Pan-American and World Championships, such as Sarah Menezes, world medallist in judo; Aline Para and Leo Bortolini, from Brazilian Olympic team of handball; Moacir Zimmermann, medallist at the 2009 Universiade in Belgrade in athletics, Fernando Silva and Guilherme Roth, in swimming, and Valéria Schmidt and Vanessa Pereira, 2010 World University Futsal Champions.OuvirLer foneticamente

“We had a significant improvement in the teams’ technical level, including a bigger variation of states medallists. Before just Rio and São Paulo conquered more titles. This year we had on the podium Mato Grosso do Sul, Roraima, states with less tradition, what shows the interest and dissemination of university sport in the whole country”, said Edinilton Vasconcelos, technical director of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU).

CBDU also used the 2010 Brazilian University Games to observe and analyze the teams and athletes that should be in the Brazilian delegation at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzen (China).

“This tournament is an important stage for the youth and futures sports talents and as we have the Universiade next year we observe the teams and the athletes that can represent the country in China. Every year we have more participants in the Brazilian University Games and with better technical quality which shows that we are in the right way: sport and education are tools of health and social promotion and also a showcase for student-athletes and future Olympic talents”, completed Luciano Cabral, CBDU President and FISU Vice-President.
