University Sports in the Highlight of the 15th Portuguese Sports Gala

All Portuguese champions

 

LISBOA The 15th Portuguese Sports Gala took place on November 16th at the Estoril Casino. An organization of the Portugal Sports Confederation (CDP), the event brought together athletes, coaches, officials and institutions linked to the national sports movement. The Portuguese Academic Federation of University Sports (FADU), member of CDP did not want to miss this event.

The year of the Centennial Celebration of the Portuguese Republic set the tone for the tribute “One Hundred Athletes, One Hundred Years of the Republic.” Connected to the University Sports, the following persons received this honor:

Dr. Armando Rocha
Leader, now an Honorary Member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU)

Orlando Duarte
Futsal National University Coach (1993-2010), participated 8 times at WUC Futsal. In 2008 he became World University Champion with the men’s team and Vice-champion with the women’s team.

Tomáz Morais

Rugby Sevens National University Coach (2010) having won the men’s title at the 2010 World University Rugby 7 Championship.

Nelson Évora
Athletics, Gold Medal in triple jump at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade (Serbia)

Alexandre Yokochi
Swimming, Gold Medal (200m breaststroke) at the 1987 Summer Universiade in Zagreb (Croatia) and Silver Medal at the 1985 Summer Universiade in Kobe (Japan)

Carla Sacramento
Athletics, Silver Medal in the 1,500 meters at the 1997 Summer Universiade in Sicily (Italy)

Naide Gomes
Athletics, Silver Medal in Long Jump at the 2005 Summer Universiade in Izmir (Turkey)

Ticha Penicheiro
Basketball, represented Portugal at the Universiade in the 90 years.

Nuno Delgado
Judo, Bronze Medal in the 81kg and Silver Medal by teams at the 14th World University Championship held in Prague (Czech Republic) in 1998.

In the honors awarded to International Champions in 2010, received the award for the results at University level:
Sara Moreira – World University Champion Cross Country
University National Team Rugby Sevens – World University Champion
Pedro Póvoa – European University Champion Taekwondo -58 Kg

However, the highlight of the evening was the awards ceremony “Sportsmen of the Year” in categories Couch, Female Athlete, Male Athlete, Promising Athlete and Team, for which only five were named finalists in each category on a universe of more than 70 sports federations.

The strong presence of and the reference to the University Sports in all five categories was very much present, i.e.
Female Athlete: Sara Moreira (University Sports / Athletics)
Male Athlete: Pedro Leal (Rugby – captain of the Rugby 7 National University Team who won the WUC 2010)
Young Promising Athlete: Frederico Oliveira (2010 World University Rugby 7 Champion)
Coach: Tomáz Morais (University Sports / 2010 World University Rugby 7 Champion)
Team: National Women’s Futsal University Team (2010 World University Vice-Champion)

Tomáz Morais, was the big winner for Best Coach of the Year.

In the remaining categories, the following persons were awarded: Telma Monteiro, Judo (Female Athlete), João Silva, Triathlon (Male Athlete), Joana Vasconcelos, Canoeing (Youth Pledge) and the National Team’s Under-23 Canoe – Speed (Team).
