KAZAN – The UNICS Cultural and Sports Complex held the first mini football tournament: the ‘Universiade Village Cup’.
The tournament was organized by the Kazan 2013 Executive Committee and Kazan Federal University (KFU). According to Damir Akhmetshin, Chairman of the Coordination Council of the student campus and fourth year student of the Physics Department of KFU, the idea of holding the tournament among the teams of the Universiade Village and the residence halls sprang from the meeting of sports organizers and was backed by KFU officials, staff of the Universiade Village and Mayor of the Universiade Village Farid Abdulganiev. ‘We are grateful to the organizers. It’s nice that such cultural and sporting events are held for students’, he said.
The tournament gathered 11 teams that were divided into three subgroups. All in all, there were 80 students that entered the championship. Apart from the participants, the sporting event attracted a great deal of supporters who watched the matches with great interest.
Ruslan Kazakov, first year student of the Physics Department of Kazan Federal University, mentioned a high level of entrants. ‘The matches feature a tight and stubborn struggle as everyone strives for victory’, one of the participants of the tournament said.
Following the results of the group games, the final stage saw matches played by the combined teams of the residence halls № 4 and 2 of Kazan Federal University and the residence hall № 5 of the Universiade Village. The tough battle ended with the win of the residence hall № 4 of Kazan Federal University.
