2011 WU Update: Chinese Delegation Celebrates “Year of Rabbit”

3 February 2011

ERZURUM The Erzurum Universiade is by all means a special experience for all students in the Chinese delegation, for most of whom this is the first time to spend the Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve in a foreign country.

According to the Chinese calendar, February 2nd, 2011 is the last day of the “Year of Tiger” and the upcoming year is the “Year of Rabbit”. The newyear’s eve is the time when families get together. Traditionally the whole family cooks dumplings – Chinese food made from flour, meat and different vegetables, and lights fireworks. But for all the members in the Chinese delegation, this year they could not make the countdown with their families. But that does not mean the celebration is by any means regretful.

On February 2nd, the whole delegation went to a restaurant in the suburbs of Erzurum. The restaurant was decorated with Chinese paper-cuts, kneaded knots and flags. Making full use of the limited resources, they cooked three types of dumplings – with beef, lamb and carrot as stuffing respectively. There was also the lottery, with winners getting their special New Year’s presents, some with T-shirts, some with scarves.

At the end of the celebration, Chinese attendees invited their Turkish attachés to have a song competition, the two parties both impressed each other by singing their traditional songs.

The party concluded with laughter and cheering, which left a joyful memory for all the Chinese people and their Turkish friends.
