KAZAN – The final day of the All-Russian University Rowing Competitions, Russian University Canoe/Kayak Competitions and Russian Rowing Championship was marked with a visit of very important guests that came to inspect the Rowing Centre and attend the sporting events.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev became the main guest of the final day of the competitions. While on his working trip toKazan, he paid a visit to the Rowing Centre, toured its facilities and attended final canoe/kayak and rowing races. The President even tried his hand at the kayak paddling simulator.
Earlier that day Dmitry Medvedev visited Sabantuy, the Tatar national holiday widely celebrated in Tatarstan following spring field work. Accompanied by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, the President of Russia made a tour of courtyards featuring traditional handicrafts of different peoples ofRussiaand visited an improvised Tatar house where he tasted dishes of Tatar national cuisine.
The Rowing Centre, the 27th venue of the 2013 Summer Universiade, has successfully hosted its first three test events. It stands to note that Kazan bids to host the 2015/2017 FINA World Championships. Kazan’s major rivals are Guadalajara, Mexico; Guangzhou, China; Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, and Montreal,Canada. If Kazan wins the 2015 or 2017 World Aquatics Championship bid, the Rowing Centre will host open water swimming events.
