2013 SU Update: Kazan will host the World Water Sports Championships 2015!

Shanghai: July 15, the International Swimming Federation Office (FINA) decided that Kazan will host the World Water Sports Championships 2015.

Presentations of the World Water Sports Championships 2015 potential host cities were made early in the morning (Moscow time) in Shanghai’s “Shangri La” Hotel. Russian bid was the last – after Guadalajara (Mexico) and Hong Kong (special administrative region of China).

We would remind you that Russian bidding committee delegation was presented by the Deputy Minister of Sport, Tourism and Youth Affairs Pavel Kolobkov, President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, Executive Director of the Kazan 2015/2017 bidding committee, Director General of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate Vladimir Leonov, Sports Broadcasting Director General Vasily Kiknadze, the All-Russian Swimming Federation President Vladimir Salnikov, fourfold Olympic champion, IOC member Alexander Popov and threefold Olympic champion Mariya Kiseleva. During the presentation for FINA Office members each of them made a presentation in English on particular competitive advantages of Kazan in a struggle for the right to hold the World Water Sports Championships. Two video films “A Thousand Worlds of New” and “Speed of Life” by famous Hollywood’s director Rupert Wainwright were also shown during the presentation. “Media Arts Group” advertising company helped to make the final part of the presentation.

In accordance with the presentation results, Russian bid was chosen the best by FINA Office members, and we came over Guadalajara and Hong Kong.

According to Executive Director of the Kazan 2015/2017 bidding committee, Director General of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate Vladimir Leonov, “this victory, undoubtedly, has a historic value not only for Russian sport lovers, but for the whole country because Russia will host the World Water Sports Championships for the first time. It is noteworthy that it will be held right after the Universiade 2013 in Kazan and Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 and it will be an another step of Russian sport modernization and update of the resources and infrastructure base. We hope that the World Water Sports Championships will inspire a lot of Russians to do sports and swimming in particular. Kazan already has modern sport objects and the upcoming championship will broaden the infrastructure base.”

Thanks to the Universiade 2013 preparation, Kazan sport infrastructure will soon be ready to hold the World Water Sports Championships 2015. Particularly, championship’s main cluster will be built on the joint territory of 45,000-seat stadium and Aquatics Palace. We would remind you that it is planned to install 2 pools – training pool and competition pool – to hold the World Water Sports Championships. The Championship’s International press center will also be located on the territory of football stadium. Aquatics Palace will hold diving, synchronized swimming and water polo. Open water swimming will be held in the Rowing Centre opened in June.
