BRASILIA – Tennis players from six states (São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul e Goiás) played the Brazilian University Sport League of Tennis between July 04th to 09th, in São Paulo. The young athletes disputed the national title and also their selection for the 2011 Summer Universíade inChina.
After five days of tournament – in male and female singles – Eric Gomes (UniSant’anna) and Fabiana Chiaparini (ESPM) won the championship and will representBrazilat the Shenzhen Universiade next August.
Eric and Fabiana participate in the professional tennis circuit in junior and adult categories. Eric got number 270 on the international single ranking from ATP. Now they are focusing on their academic education and playing regional and university tournaments. “Winning the League and representing Brazil in China are a great opportunity to learn and experience different players and students from all over the world. I´m playing several regional tournaments and I feel I have a good game rhythm to be my best at the Universiade”, told Eric.
In 2004 Fabiana represented Brazil in the Lusofonia Games, in Angola, Africa, and won a gold medal. “It´s wonderful that I can representBrazilonce more and will push the practicing these weeks to make a good tournament in China”, she said.
After three months and five tournaments (Beach Volleyball, Martial Arts, Chess and Table Tennis and Court Sports), the Brazilian University Sports League is on a break for the preparation and training of the Brazilian team and athletes for the 2011 Summer Universíade. Brazil will bring to Shenzhen the biggest team ever with more than 200 athletes.
“The League action returns after the Universíade with the finals of Court Sports, University Student Running, Soccer, Rugby and Beach Games tournaments to bring together more young student-athletes from all parts of our country”, pointed out Luciano Cabral, President of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU).
