Elite Athletes Receive FISU Scholarship

SHENZHEN – Three elite student athletes have received FISU scholarships today at the 32nd General Assembly of the FISU congress in Shenzhen, China.

FISU Assessor Chong Yang Kim announced the recipients and handed the scholarship out with newly elected FISU President, Claude-Louis Gallien.

The successful recipients were Sarah Nanbawa fromUganda, Sergio Franco fromPortugal, and Sarita Morales Brenes from Costa Rica.

Sergio Franco captained the University of Coimbra’s 7-nation rugby team during the 2010 European Championships.

He said he is honoured to be awarded the scholarship and thanks FISU and the Portuguese University Sports Federation for their support.  

He added, “I think a strong performance during the European and Portuguese championships in 2010 contributed to the success.”

Franco will now work towards his masters and PhD in sport training at the University of Coimbra.

Sarita Morales Brenes earned her scholarship through her record time of 24.3 seconds in the 200m sprint final at the Central American and Caribbean University Games.

Brenes said she is happy to have been selected for the scholarship and urges other students to apply for this great opportunity in the future.

Sarah Nanbawa from Uganda was unable attend today’s event; she received a scholarship for excellence in track and field and a delegate collected it on her behalf.
