2017 SU Bidding Update: FISU Evaluation Committee visits UnB and Sports Venues

BRASILIA The Olympic Center at the University of Brasilia (UnB) opened the schedule of the FISU Evaluation Committee, November 05th, in Brasília (DF). The federal capital is candidate to host the Summer Universiade in 2017 and the project of reshaping the sports facilities of UnB is one of the highlights of the campaign.

The vice-chancellor and acting chancellor of UnB, João Batista de Sousa, received the FISU officials, Hisato Igarashi, Marian Dymalski and Marc Vandenplas, and the members of the Brasília 2017 Committee headed by Secretary of Sports of the Federal District Government, Celio Rene, and the president of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU), Luciano Cabral.

Architect Marcos Villas Boas presented a summary of the project to the visitors and, accompanied by the director of the Olympic Center, André Reis, and the director of the faculty of Physical Education, Alexandre Rezende, walked through areas of the Olympic Center.

“The UnB started thinking about the revival of the Olympic Center targeting the major sporting events that will occur in the capital. And from the beginning of the application process for the Universiade, UnB gave full support to the project, involving all departments and caring, always, about the community involvement and sustainability of interventions”, explained João.

For João Batista, the 2017 Universiade is a window and an opportunity for  the capital and for UnB. “This revitalization project of the Olympic Center is an old dream and an expensive one. And with the possible of holding the Universiade we can complete these works that will join the university and the city”, he added.

Hisato Igarashi spoke with the media present during the visit and highlighted the great legacy of the UnB project for the entire community. “The city already has good facilities and will go through a series of works for the 2014 FIFA World. Also, after visiting the campus of UnB, we could see the main idea of ​​the legacy of Brasília’s application to receive the Universiade”, he noted.

After the visit to UnB, the group went to other sports facilities: Naval Club, AABR gymnasium, Mackenzie College gymnasium and the Asceb gymnasium. The FISU officials also visited the Orthopedic Hospital and Specialty Medicine, where they were met by doctor Paulo Lobo Junior, the hospital’s technical manager. “We are reference in sports medicine and we have planned works to increase the number of beds and also the construction of a cardiology center, increasing our ability”, said Paulo Junior.

In the afternoon, the FISU delegates attended presentations clarifying points concerning to the dossier as safety, medical services, promotion and marketing, media, information technology and educational and cultural programs.

Closing the inspection visit to Brasilia on Sunday (November 6th) , Hisato Igarashi, Marian Dymalski and Marc Vandenplas will participate in a press conference.
