2013 SU Update: Universiade Torch Relay – What Surprises does Team 2013 have in Store?

KAZAN – The Universiade Torch Relay’s concept was presented on November 29th during the overview workshop organized specially for students of higher education institutions that had partnered with the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate. Deputy Director General of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate Igor Sivov was the one to introduce it to leaders of volunteer training centres and press officers of major universities from 14 federal regions of Russia.

«Utmost importance will be attached to the Universiade Torch Relay », said Igor Sivov. According to the primary concept which is currently being elaborated by Team 2013, the Universiade Torch Relay will kick off either in Paris, where the first ever World Student Games were held, or in Turin, which hosted the first university competitions that were baptized with the name ‘Universiade’. The project’s idea is to set up a cauldron in major universities of these cities and the Kazan 2013 Flame will ignite those cauldrons which will be used in the future for kindling Universiade Torches of next University Games.

Students and universities of Russia are to become main participants of the Kazan 2013 Torch Relay. It is expected that the relay will be welcomed in 27 Russian cities which is equal to the number of sports included in the competition program of the SU and its route will cover main federal universities of theRussian Federation. The torch will travel by plane, by train and over land. «Due to a vivid interest that we clearly saw during the FISU Flag Relay, we decided to announce a contest among Russian higher education institutions for the right to host the Universiade Torch Relay and become its main keepers in the region», Igor Sivov said.

The Universiade Torch Relay’s project will receive a final approval of the Supervisory Council of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate after it will be duly considered.
