Award winners of the Universiade Language School contest
GWANGJU – Students of the Universiade Language School for the 2015 Gwangju Universiade had an opportunity to show off the language skills that they have honed since the beginning of this year.
On December 8th, the Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) for the 2015 Summer Universiade held ‘the 2011 Universiade Language School Contest’ at the Chosun University auditorium on the final class day for the language courses.
22 finalists, who had been taking language courses at 7 different university language education centers in the greater Gwangju area, competed during the contest. The wide range of contestants from teenagers to senior citizens in their 70’s reflected people’s enthusiasm for learning foreign languages.
During the contest, participants were asked to deliver a three-minute speech on Universiade or volunteering. The honor of winning the first prize went to Cho Gyeong-ok (a 49 year-old student from Gwangju University Language Center) for English and Park Seon-yeong (a 23 year-old student from Honam University Language Center) for Chinese.
As special guests, 8 middle school students from the Global Leader Program appeared during the contest and demonstrated their excellent English skills.
A source from the GUOC said, “Through this contest, we wanted to encourage the Language School students to take this opportunity to have a stronger desire to study foreign languages. From now on, the Language School is going to provide more comprehensive courses that will equip language students with the knowledge necessary for voluntary service.”
The Universiade Language School is a five-year-long language education project that was established to secure a large pool of competent volunteers for the 2015 Universiade. Since the opening of the program, 3,500 students have graduated from the language courses. The language program is popular among citizens who wish to be part of the upcoming international event.
