13th West Africa University Games successfully hosted in Nigeria

ILORIN The 13th West Africa University Games (WAUG) were held very successfully at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, from Tuesday March 27th to Saturday April 7th, 2012. The regional event attracted 56 participating Universities; 1 of which was an observer and other five 5 only attended the General Assembly. A total of 1,443 athletes, 372 team officials, and over 400 technical officials from all the 5 member countries took part in a sports program featuring 13 Olympic sports.

The competition was declared open at a colorful ceremony on Saturday 31st March, 2012 by the Federal Minister of Sports/Chairman National Sports Commission who represented the President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. Present were various dignitaries, including Dr. Malumbete RALETHE, FASU President and FISU EC member and Prof. Ernest AWANTA, FASU Internal Auditor, The Federal Minister of Education and members of Kwara State Executive Council. The members of the FASU Executive took time to interact with various stakeholders in the region and also students as they enjoyed the highly competitive events where the University of Port Harcourt took the overall trophy.

In his words, the outgoing WAUG president Prof. Lasun EMIOLA said; “WAUG appreciates very much, the support of FASU/FISU and all the Vice-Chancellors, officials and even the athletes – our leaders of tomorrow without who, there can be no WAUG.”

The Games were declared closed on Friday 6th April, 2012 by the Kwara State Governor Abdulfatai Hammed, who was represented by the Kwara State Commissioner for Youths and Sports.
