18th WUC Orienteering: Arrivals of the Teams

ALICANTE – Alicante is one of the most flourishing cities in Spain. It is the fourth city in Spanish with a total GDP behind Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. This expansion is reflected in the tourist offers in Spain, thanks to the fantastic climate in this part of the country, with a mix of modernity and traditional corners in the mountain regions. Indeed, great contrasts exist between the tourist areas and the silence in the mountains.

CICIn this scene, all preparations for the 18^th edition of the WUC Orienteering are being made in the Sports Service at the University of Alicante for the hosted by CEDU, el Comité Espanol del Deporte Universitario (Spanish Committee of the University Sport) from July 1^st to 6^th , 2012 and the University of Alicante.

Spain is a very active FISU Member Association. Since 2002, we had Cross Country in Santiago de Compostela, followed by Valencia for Women’s Handball. In 2004, Palma de Mallorca for Triathlon and Futsal, and also Madrid for Archery the same year. In 2006, Valencia organised Taekwondo, Palma Match Racing & Sailing. In 2008, Rugby 7 in Córdoba. In 2010, Malaga for Golf, Vigo for Taekwondo, Valencia for Triathlon and in 2012, apart from Orienteering, we will have the WUC Archery in Córdoba next week.

The accreditation opened from 9am at the Sports Events office at the University, and up to now, the CIC received the following countries since this morning: Austria, Belgium, China, Finland, France, Japan and Slovakia. The Organising Committee is waiting for up to 28 countries to show up. This will be confirmed later!

For the program of the teams, they can have a free training all day long.

Regarding accommodation, the athletes and FISU officals are accommodated in two different places : Villa Universitaria and Europa House, well connected to the area of competition. Those hotels will be checked by the CMI delegate this afternoon.

The day will end with the 1^st CISCA meeting at 6pm. The CISCA is composed for this Championship by Mr. Adrian Gagea as FISU Executive Committee delegate, Mr.Ola Kaberg, CTI Chair, Mr.Roland Questel, CMI Delegate, Mr.Nihat Doker, CIC delegate and Ms. Nicole Mangelschots, FISU staff delegate. Main points like accommodation, food, protocol for the opening and awarding ceremonies, doping control and of course technical points for the competition itself will be raised.

The day will close with the 1^st team officials meeting to be held after the CISCA meeting.
