BLUMENAU – The Czechs took the gold in the men’s and women’s competitions at the 21st World University Handball Championship in Blumenau (SC), Brazil.
Men’s Tournament
In the men’s final, the Czech Republic played against Portugal and won 34:24. Being the favorites from the start, the Czechs did well, got hold of the Portuguese, and will return home with the gold medal. With this result, Portugal has established itself as the WUC runner-up taking home the silver.
Brazil and Poland battled for the bronze. The brass went to the Brazilians who won by a score 33:29.
Turkey and Chinese Taipei disputed the fifth and sixth spot. Turkey won by a score 33:29.
Korea and Kuwait played for the seventh and eighth places. The game’s final score was 49:30 in favor of Kuwait.
Chile and Mexico played for ninth and tenth with a score of 36:25 in favor of Chile.
Women’s Tournament
The Romanians began their gold game with great determination and willingness to take on the invincible Czech opponent, but the Czechs proved their mastery ending the game 32:18 in their favor.
Brazil and Poland played for the bronze. The Brazilian team lost to Poland with a 15 point difference, resulting in a score of 26:41.
Uruguay and Chile played for the last two spots with Uruguay winning 28:20.
The 21st World University Handball is a realization of the International Federation of University Sports (FISU), the Brazilian Confederation of University Sports (CBDU), and the Brazilian Federal Government under the sponsorship of: the Municipal Sports Blumenau (FMD), Department of State Tourism, Culture and Sport and the State of Santa Catarina, and support of the Federation of University Sports Hall of Blumenau and Blumenau.
