3rd WUC Weightlifting: Day 1 of Competitions

EILAT – Yesterday, November 6th, was the first day of competitions at the 3rd World University Weightlifting Championship in Eilat, Israel.

“We are proud that the FISU organization choose us to organize the competition”, words by Mr. Arie Rozenzweig, Chairman of ASA, the Israeli Member Association of FISU.

Gold medallist in the 56kg Men’s category is Igor Bour from Moldova with a total result of 258 kg. Silver medallist, Chi-Chung Tan from Chinese Taipei (240 kg) and Bronze medallist, Smbat Margaryan (231 kg).

In the 62kg Men’s competition, Yoichi Itokazu, from Japan, won the gold with an outstanding result (290kg.), silver went to Ghenadie Dodoglo, from Moldova (267kg.) and Tomohiro Tamayose from Japan (255kg.) settled for the bronze.

In the 48kg Women’s category, Gold medalist, Yunhua He from China lifted 178kg which got her the gold medal. Silver went to Suzanna Sanchez from USA (142kg.) and bronze to Emilia Malec from Poland (139kg.)

In the 53kg Women’s category, the gold medal went to another Chinese lifter, Xiaoting Chen (213kg.). Kittima Sutanan from Thailand (204kg.) won silver and Rosane Santos from Brazil (177kg.) bronze. In this weight category also participated Aksana Zalatarova from Israel winning the 4th place with a total result of 143kg.

“Chinese lifters are today one level higher than the rest of the world mainly in the lighter categories” said Dr. Yerucham Barak, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. He also added that “the competition is well known in the Weightlifting World, and lifters are high motivated to participate. We have with us Olympic high level athletes. I expect a very interesting competition.”

Competitions will continue until November 9th in the “Begin Sports Hall” in Eilat with the participation of more than 200 weightlifters from over 40 countries around the world, a really record of participation at this FISU.
