3rd WUC Weightlifting: Junior World Record on Day 2

8 November 2012

EILAT – After the second day of competitions, the Chinese female lifters keep showing their world class level.

In the 58 kg category, Wei Deng achieved the fifth result in the history of the world weightlifting competitions. Enough to win an Olympic Medal! The 244kg lift settled a junior world record. In the same category, the silver medallist, Jing Jong Kuo from Chinese Taipei, finished with a total of 232 kg. The bronze medal went to Mikiko Andon from Japan after a total result of 203 kg. “I did not meant to make a new record during the last clean and jerk attempt”, said Deng after the competition. “This is my first time in Israel and I enjoy it very much!”.

The lifters routine is very special. They train all day long starting even before breakfast. Nova Hotel in Eilat was ready for the kind of ‘strange’ arrangements required by the Organizing Committee. A special training area around the swimming pool that is busy all day long. The floor trembles every single minute when the heavy weights fall down!

“I eat breakfast, have a training session and then go to the University. I study in the Business School. In the evening I have another training session. I train about 4 or 5 hours a day”, said Moldavian lifter Artum Pipa, silver medallist in the men’s 69 kg category. The gold medal in this category went to Jiongsing Won (7th place at the London Olympics) who made a total of 318 kg, the same result as Pipa but because his body weight was lower, he won the medal.

In the women’s category up to 63 kg, the gold went to Natalia Halshtekina from Russia after a total result of 227 kg. The silver medal went to Li Chu from China with a total of 220 kg, while another Russian lifter, Natalia Grishina, settled for the bronze.
