3rd WUC Weightlifting: Day 3 of Competitions

EILAT – This third day of competition was the opportunity to see some of the categories lift some very impressive bars.

In the women’s 69kg category which opened the day, the match in all events opposed Chinese Taipei’s WANG Ya-Jhen to China’s CAI Xinghua with Kazakhstan’s Gulnaz NAURYZOVA being the strongest contestant for bronze.

In the end, WANG Ya-Jhen (TPE) grabbed the gold medals in snatch, clean and jerk and total with a total of 222kg, ahead of CAI Xinghua (218kg) and Gulnaz NAURYZOVA with 185kg.

In the men’s 77kg, the Russian lifter and junior world champion Dmitrii KHOMYAKOV won the snatch contest after lifting a barbell of 155kg while Samvel GRIGORYAN (ARM) grabbed the silver in snatch with 149kg and Rejepbay REJEPOV (TKM) insured its place on the podium with a bar of 146kg.

In clean and jerk, the gold medal went to Samvel GRIGORYAN (ARM) with a bar of 184kg insuring him of the silver medal in the total with 333kg. Silver medal in clean and jerk went to Dumitru CAPITARI (MDA) with a 183kg lift, giving him the third place on the podium for total (328kg) while, with the same lift, Dmitrii KHOMYAKOV took the bronze in clean and jerk and the gold in total (338kg). The clean and jerk was uncertain until the end with the two favorites missing their first attempt putting them a lot of pressure but finally managing their way to the highest steps of the podium.

In the women’s 75kg category, the snatch contest could be resumed by a dual for the first between Jaqueline FERREIRA (BRA), 8th in the London Olympics and Olga ZUBOVA, one of the stars of the category, while LAI Hsiang-Ting (TPE) with 100kg made her way to the bronze medal. The gold was finally won by Olga ZUBOVA (RUS) after achieving the same performance than her Brasilian competitor, lifting a 106kg barbell but having a lighter bodyweight.

In the clean and jerk, the same lifters fought their way to the podium with FERREINA and LAI trying to step on the second step while ZUBOVA made her way to the gold medal starting her competition with 130kg and reaching finally 135. At the same time, Jaqueline FERREIRA ended her contest in clean and jerk with 125kg and LAI Hsiang-Ting lifted 128kg getting silver ahead of the Brazilian. In the total, ZUBOVA won the gold with a 241kg total, FERREIRA finishing second with a 231kg total and LAI completing the podium with a 226kg total.

To conclude the day, the men of the 85kg categories offered the audience a fantastic contest with uncertainty from the beginning to the end for the 16 entered lifters. The gold for snatch was taken by Artem OKULOV with a barbell of 162kg, bar also lifted by Gabriel SINCRAIAN (ROU) who collected a silver medal due to a heavier bodyweight. The bronze of the snatch went to RYU Jun-Ho (KOR) with a 157kg.

In the clean and jerk competition the uncertainty continued with seven competitors starting their contest at 180kg or above. The clean and jerk competition ended with a clear victory for the Youth Olympic 2010 champion Artem OKULOV (RUS) lifting a 195kg same barbell than Aghasi AGASYAN (ARM) taking the silver while Gheorghi CERNEI (MDA) took the bronze with 190kg. In the total, OKULOV won the gold with 357kg while AGASYAN grabbed the silver with 350kg and CERNEI with a total of 346kg.

Today, the heavy category will conclude this 3rd World University Weightlifting Championship.
