5th World University Boxing Championship – Day 2 of Competitions

BAKU On this second day of competitions in the Baku sports palace, 8 bouts took place seeing three new local boxers in the ring.

In the first match of the day, Evgeny Efremov (RUS) faced one of the local boxers Samir Mammadov in the 52kg category. This fight appeared to be a very good starter with the Russian boxer winning the first round 4-2, and obliging the local boxer to create more boxing, leading him to take the second round 6-3. In a spectacular third round, in a hot atmosphere – the two delegations supporting their boxer – Mammadov took the final round 4-2 to win the bout 12-9 and advance to the next round of the competition.

The second fight of the day opposed Erdi Alparslan (TUR) to Ukraine’s Alexandr Shepelyuk, still in the 52kg category. Shepelyuk took the first round 3-1, the second one 4-2 to end on a severe 5-2 in the last round for an overall victory 12-5.

In the 60kg category, Dmitry Yun (RUS) dominated Orken Myrzash (KAZ) in the first round (4-1), confirmed his advantaged in the second round (3-1). After counting the Kazakh until 8, the referee finally decided to stop the fight in the third round, giving the victory to Yun.

Next fight saw Evgeny Koskarov (RUS) face Bogdan Shelestyuk (UKR) in the 69kg category. After a tight first round won 3-2 by the Ukrainian boxer, Koskarov took the lead in the bout taking the second round 6-4. In an intense final round, the two boxers ended on a 6-6 score offering the win to Koskarov on the score of 14-13.

In the 81kg category, the local boxer Vatan Huseynli (AZE) defeated the Georgian Aliko Oniani (GEO) after a first round taken 4-1 and the referee stopping the fight in the second round after the Georgian coach threw the towel in the ring.

The next bout brought together in the ring Caner Sayak (TUR) and Rain Karlson (EST), the sole representative of Estonia in this championship. In this first fight of the 91kg category, the Turkish boxer took the lead 4-2 in a tight first round, but Karlson made a great impression in the second round taking it on the score of 6-2, impression he also gave on the last round with a clear 5-1 win for an overall 14-7 victory.

In the next fight, the two athletes, Teymur Mammadov (AZE) and Shigauddin Aliyev (RUS) were both disqualified after having started a battle with kicks, offering at the same time the gold medal of the category to Karlson who had earlier won his semi-final, silver going to his opponent of the day, Turkey’s Sayak.

In the last fight of the day, the first Moldovan boxer Alexei Zavatin (MDA) entered the competition against Alexey Emelianov (RUS), the Russian taking quickly the lead 4-2 and 5-3 and ended up making his way through the draw of this +91kg category, taking the last round 7-4.
