5th WUC Boxing – Last Semi-Finals

BAKU In the first fight of the day, Kartashov (UKR) faced local boxer Shahpalangov (AZE) in the first semi-final of the 60kg category. The first round of the evening was taken by Shahpalangov on the score of 3-1. The Azeri boxer continued his way to the final taking the second round 5-1 creating a six-points gap which happened to be too important for Kartashov to come back. Shahpalangov finally won this first bout after the referee stopped the match the Ukrainian falling KO on the third round.

The second semi-final of the category started in a much tighter way with a first half ending in a score of 4-4 between the Russian Dmitriy Yun and the Turk Bunyamin Aydin. The second round was much more in favour of Yun with a score of 6-2. Dmitriy Yun finally made his way to the final on a final score of 11-8.

On Sunday, the final will oppose Shahpalangov to Yun, Aydin and Kartashov grab the bronze medals of the category.

In the 69kg category, the first semi-final saw Tamerlan Abdullayev (AZE) face Ablaikan Muratov (KAZ) in a very spectacular bout. The score of 6-4 in the first round demonstrated how intense the fight had been. The second round went to the boxer from Almaty on the score of 3-2 creating a high level of suspense before the last round. In the last round, after receiving one point by the referee for a fault of his opponent, Abdullayev got his ticket for the final with a victory 12-10.

In the second semi-final, Onur Sipal (TUR) faced Evgeniy Koshkarov (RUS) for a place in the gold final. The first round went to Onur on the score of 2-1, the second ended on a 4-4 score while the last round went to the Ukrainian on the score of 4/3. With a 9-9 score the decision came to the judges, giving the victory to the Turk.

Sunday, Sipal and Abdullayev will fight for the gold, Koshkarov and Muratov take the bronze of the 69kg category.

In the 81kg category, the first semi-final saw Sergey Nikitin (RUS) box with Erasil Seifoldanov in a bout which was quite unbalanced. The Russian boxer took the lead from the first round which he won 7-3 and did not go further than the half of the second round when the referee decided to stop the bout to protect the Kazakh boxer.

The second semi-final of the category was much tighter between Oleksandr Ganzulia (UKR) and Vatan Huseynli (AZE). The first round, very tactical went to the Ukrainian 3-2. The second round was even tighter and ended in an epic 3-3 creating high uncertainty on the last round. Ganzulia finally managed to be the first boxer to eliminate a local boxer in the ring with a final 12-9 victory.

The final of the 81kg category on Sunday will oppose Ganzulia to Nikitin, Huseynli and Seifoldanov take the bronze of the category.

In the super-heavy category (+91kg), in the first semi-final Yusuf Achik (TUR) faced Oleksandr Skorye (UKR) in a match that quickly went in favor of the Turkish boxer, with a first round taken 4-2, and a second 5-2 with the Ukrainian boxer being counted 8. The final win 2-1 in the last round was just an anecdote for Achik who made his way to the final.

The last fight of the day, and last semi-final opposed Kamran Mehdiyev (AZE) and Alexey Emelyanov (RUS) in a close bout, the first round ending on a 3-3 score. The second round was clearly in favor of a much more precise Emelyanov who created a determining gap, taking the round 8-4 and finally the bout 14-9.

On Sunday, Emelyanov will face Achik for gold, Mehdiyev and Skorye take the bronze medals.
