5th WUC Boxing in Baku
BAKU – The 5th World University Boxing Championship in Baku came to an end on Sunday, November 18th, 2012.
Nine fights were on the programme of this last day of competitions – the 91kg category having been decided further to the disqualification of two boxers in the same semi-final.
The first gold medal to be awarded on this final day was the one of the 49kg category between Salman Alizada (AZE) and Ferhat Pehlivan (TUR). The first round was won by the local boxer 3-2 and on a much more active second round, Alizada increased the gap with a 4-1 score. The last round ending on a 5-5 score offered a contested victory of the local boxer on the score of 12-8. Alizada takes the first gold of the championship while Pehlivan gets silver for Turkey.
In the 52kg category, another boxer from the host country, Mammadov faced Shepelyuk (UKR). Shepelyuk took a good start winning the first round 3-2, but Mammadov reacted in a second round spent with the two boxers clinching most of the time, taking the round and the advantage 3-1. The last round taken 5-2 by Mammadov was just a confirmation of the result, with a final score of 10-6 in favor of the local, grabbing a second gold for Azerbaijan, while Shepelyuk took the first silver for Ukraine.
The next final saw Javid Chalabiyev (AZE) lose the first round against Mahir Pashayev (RUS) 6-5 in the 56kg category. Pashayev took the second round on the score of 4-2 creating a three-point gap before the last round. With a score of 6-6 in the last round, Pashayev took the first gold of the competition for Russia, Chalabiyev grabbing silver.
In the 60kg category, Shahpalangov (AZE) faced another Russian boxer, the impressive Dmitry Yun (RUS). The first round was concluded on a score of 4-4 in what appeared to be the most intense fight of the day until then. The local boxer took the second round on the score of 4-3 and the last one 5-1, offering one new title for the host country on the overall score of 13-8.
In the 64kg category, another match between Azerbaijan and Russia took place with Ruslan Urikh (RUS) facing Heybatulla Hajialiyev (AZE). Urikh took the lead in the first round (4-3) in what appeared to be a very tight fight and increased his advantage taking the second round 5-3. Urikh concluded the fight by another round taken 5-3 for a new gold medal for Russia on the final score of 14-9.
The next final opposed Tamerlan Abdullayev (AZE) to Onur Sipal (TUR) in the 69kg category. The first round saw Abdullayev take the advantage with a win 3-1. The second round ended on a 5-5 score leaving uncertainty on the final result of this match to be decided in the last round. The last round went to Sipal with the score of 6-5 but it was not sufficient to close the gap. The title finally went to Abdullayev on a 13-12 final score.
In the 75kg category, Ahmadov (AZE) faced Suleymanov (RUS) in the bout for gold. The fight remained undecided until the last bout (1-1/4-3 in favour of Ahmadov in the first rounds) and the decision was finally made by the judges after a final score of 7-7. The judges declared Ahmadov the winner.
The next fight brought Russia’s Nikitin and Ukraine’s Ganzulia in the ring for the 81kg category final. Ganzulia took the lead immediately with a well controlled 4-2 first round but uncertainty came back when Nikitin won the second round 4-3 just one point behind before last round. Despite a last round won by the Russian 5-4 and a score of 11-11, the victory went to Ganzulia on a judges’ decision.
Next, Rain Karlson appeared in the ring to be declared winner of the 91kg category after the two contestants of the other semi-finals were disqualified earlier this week.
The last final of the competition (+91kg) opposed the Turkish boxer Achik to Russia’s Emelyanov. Achik took the first round 4-3. In the second round Emelyanov dominated with a clear 6-3 win. The last round of the competition crowned Emelyanov on a final score of 14-11 Emelyanov also received the trophy of ‘best boxer of the tournament’.
