ZAKOPANE – Yesterday, December 18th, the inaugural edition of the World University Speed Skating Championship kicked-off in Zakopane, former host city of two Winter Universiades (1993 & 2001).
Two medal races were held on the first day of competitions, i.e. the men’s 1,500m and the women’s 3,000m. In the men’s race the host country already struck gold with Jan SZYMANSKI (POL) beating Espen TVEIT (NOR). The bronze went to Maxim BAKLASHKIN (KAZ). In the women’s race, the gold was won by Martina SABLIKOVA (CZE) leaving the silver to Luiza ZLOTKOWSKA (POL) and the bronze to Marit FJELLANGER BOHM (NOR).
