Egypt takes 6th FASU Games 2012

WINDHOEK – The 6th All Africa University Games successfully ended at the University of Namibia, Windhoek campus with Egypt carrying the day after collecting 24 gold medals four above Algeria, who raised 20 gold medals. The hosts, Namibia came 3rd with 7 gold medals and 9 silvers, edging out the tough competition from Botswana, who had 7 gold medals and 8 silvers.

At the closing ceremony held at the University’s Leisure Centre, Dr. Malumbete RALETHE the FASU President thanked all the strategic partners and stakeholders for promoting university sport. He thanked TISAN (the hosts) for organizing a successful event, even with the challenges of funding and the short time given to them to organize the games.

Trophies were awarded to winning countries in the different games. Egypt carried the day with 6 trophies of the Karate – men and women; Table tennis – men and women and Basketball -men. Algeria followed with 5 trophies in Athletics – men and Women, Soccer – men; Chess – women and Volleyball – Men. The host Namibia carried both the trophies of men and women’s Tennis while Botswana proved to be ahead of the rest of Africa in men’s chess. Mozambique as usual had a point to prove that the rest of the African countries may have to wait longer to taste the sweetness of winning the women’s basketball trophy.

Congratulations to Egypt, congratulations to TISAN for hosting such a great and successful event, congratulations to the volunteers, Technical officials, all the other participating countries and all those that ensured that the 6th All Africa University Games became a reality.
