GRANADA/ANTEQUERA – This week the CEO of the 2015 Granada Winter Universiade, Aurelio Ureña, met with the mayor of Antequera, Manuel Baron, to finalise the integration of the town into the event.

It is envisaged that the Athletics Centre for High Performance of Antequera will be the venue for figure skating and short track speed skating in 2015, and the municipal government has reiterated its firm commitment to do so.

During the meeting, Manuel Baron showed his intention to immediately begin to work on the promotion of the Universiade, and he was confident that the events will be well received by the inhabitants of his city, as is customary with the sporting events previously held there. Antequera also has a long standing tradition as far as sporting events are concerned and is no stranger to FISU. Indeed, in 2010, Antequera hosted the 13th World University Golf Championship.

‘We’re very pleased after the meeting because we see that there is a firm intention to start creating an environment of Universiade in this town’, Ureña commented. ‘We believe that the sports which will be hosted in Antequera will receive a special welcome.’ Meanwhile, Mayor Baron recalled the relevance of the Universiade to boost tourism in Antequera.

Also this week, a delegation of FISU experts visited the facilities that will host the skating events in Antequera and the remaining ice competition venues (ice hockey and curling) in Granada. The FISU delegation was headed by Milan Augustin, FISU Director for the Winter Universiade.
