LJUBLJANA – In 2008, the organisation of online bridge competitions for university students was started by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The 3rd online World Championships attracted 61 teams of 4 to 6 bridge athletes, beating the participation record in university bridge history within the World Bridge Federation and the European Bridge League (EBL).
In January 2013, the 1st Online European Universities Bridge Trophy under patronage of EUSA and EBL started with 33 universities in Europe participating. This level of participation is a new record in Europe’s university history, beating the record till now with 32 teams participating in EBL championships in Bruges in 2007, held under patronage of EUSA.
Over the next two months, the 33 teams will play first in groups of three, playing two matches to determine the 16 finalists. They will start a knock out afterwards in a round each month. The competition will continue till the first four finalists are determined.
As a prize for this Trophy, the four finalists will be invited by EUSA and EBL to come to the 2nd European Universities Games in Rotterdam in 2014. The EUSA Games are the biggest European university sports event, attracting over 2,500 participants.
All information and results are and will be available on and on Facebook. All results of the group stage as well as the “knock out” afterwards will be published.
In 2013, the 3rd European Universities Bridge Championship will otherwise be held in Kraljevica, Croatia, from 30 September to 6 October. For more information about that event, for which you can still register, please see .
