VOLTA REDONDA – From April 28th to May 3rd, thirty six teams from six Brazilian states (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Minas Gerais, and Santa Catarina) have participated in the South/Southeast/West-Central Regional stage of the University Sport League 2013. The tournament took place in the city of Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro. Over 600 people – athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers – were involved in the event.
Sixty one matches were disputed in four sports: Basketball, Futsal, Handball and Volleyball. All competitions were organized for both genders. After five days of competitions, the states of Santa Catarina, with five first places, and Rio de Janeiro, with three first places, fielded the best performing teams of the League.
The successful teams in Volta Redonda will represent Brazil at the XIV University Sports Games of Central America and the Caribbean, to be held in the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras from September 22nd to 28th, 2013.
‘This event is another initiative from CBDU to stimulate the participation of teams from the South, Southeast and West-Central regions of Brazil in the University Sport League’s competitions. We saw the same amount of teams from the North and Northeast regions, which has broken the participation record in those Regionals last April in Teresina, Piauí, with 54 competing teams’, CBDU President and FISU Vice-President Luciano Cabral commented.
All medallists in Volta Redonda are also qualified to compete in the National Finals of the University League which will be hosted in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, from May 26th to 31st. There, they will meet and compete against all the medallists from the North and Northeast Regionals.
