Australian Uniroo ‘High Flyers’ set for Kazan Universiade

21 June 2013

SYDNEY – Hand selected by Australian University Sport as the highest achievers in their respective sporting fields, the ‘High Flyers’ of the Australian Uniroos attended a body and mind camp held to assist with their preparation for the 27th Summer Universiade. The nine selected athletes hailed from nine different universities across the country, representing eight of the 27 sports held at the 27th Summer Universiade.

The line-up of guest speakers included world renowned triathlete Courtney Atkinson, who has been awarded Australian triathlete of the year four times. Courtney Atkinson on the advice he imparted to the ‘High Flyers’: “The main thing that I could convey to the ‘High Flyers’ was that it doesn’t matter if you’re competing at home or on the biggest stage in the world, you’re just doing the same game or sport or race you do every day. My message is to take it all in and cherish it; sport gives you amazing opportunities so enjoy it.”

Richard Bennett who has served as the Senior Psychologist at the New South Wales Institute of Sport ran a performance psychology session with the ‘High Flyers’. He was also joined by Dr Tristan Sharp who ran a strength and conditioning class and Dr Gary Slater who, among many things, is a consultant to the Australian Rugby Union who shared his knowledge on sports nutrition.

Hamish Moore, a selected ‘High Flyer’, from the University of Adelaide and Australian Uniroo beach volleyball player on the body and mind camp: “The ‘High Flyers’ camp was an exceptional two days. It was great to come here and meet the ‘High Flyers’ from the different sports and I’m feeling a lot better prepared than I did two years ago for the last World University Summer Games.”

The ‘High Flyers’ also took team bonding to the next level with a jet boat rider on Sydney Harbour.

The ‘High Flyers’ body and mind camp was a platform for these elite Australian university students to take in the knowledge and advice from the seasoned speakers. The camp has placed them in the best position to produce the best possible results at the 27th Summer Universiade, in Kazan Russia 6 – 17th July 2013.
