Samoa’s Shining Star

13 July 2013

Alexander Rose

KAZAN There is one athlete representing the nation of Samoa at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. Alexander Rose, a 21-year-old triathlete, is competing only in the discus at the 2013 games.

“It made sense to be 100 percent for one event, than tired for some,” said Rose, who chose discus because it was the last event of the hammer throw, shot put and discus competitions.

Rose, who came seventh overall in his event by throwing the second best he has ever thrown, is humbled to have the opportunity to represent his entire country. “I feel extremely fortunate and blessed,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of people who aren’t used to seeing a Samoan athlete here, so I am proud to wear our colors and get our country’s name out there.”

Rose first began his track and field career as a high-jumper but at 16-years-old he fell in love with the throwing events. “I just picked up the disc one day for fun,” he said. “Next thing you know I’m throwing for my university.”

At his first appearance on an international stage, Rose credits his coach for his success. “Having a good coach who can teach you the technique is the most important,” he said. “This is one of those events where just athletic talent won’t get by, you have to know exactly how to throw and be technical in the ring.”

Rose feels as though he represented his country well, he is optimistic for Samoa’s future, and said, “I know there are a lot of great athletes to come.”
