LAUSANNESince the successful 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan ended on July 17th, a great number of the high-profiled student-athletes participating in this FISU event continued their season competing in the Worlds of their respective sports. The FISU Media Department took a closer look at the recently held World Championships of FIE (fencing), IAAF (athletics) and FINA (aquatics) and struck gold as well since quite a number of the Kazan medallists also pocketed brass at these Worlds. An overview. Svetlana Romashina

2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona (ESP)

At the FINA Aquatics World Championships in Barcelona, which took place right after the 27th Summer Universiade, Kazan medallists also mounted the awarding podium in three disciplines: swimming, diving and synchronised swimming. The latter discipline featured for the first time on the Universiade sports programme in Kazan as an optional sport. The Russian Team that was crowned as Universiade champion in Kazan managed to stunt again in Barcelona where the ten girls were crowned once more as synchronised queens of the swimming pool. Svetlana Romashina, who won solo and duo gold in Kazan repeated this feat in Barcelona as well, confirming Russia as a powerhouse in this aquatics discipline. In diving, four Russians mounted the FINA podium taking five silver medals. Mexican Yahel Castillo, who ended 4th in the 3m individual in Kazan, won bronze in Barcelona. From the 11 medalled swimmers in Kazan and Barcelona, eight (6 M & 2 W) were Russians collecting 15 medals. American Megan Romano, good for a bronze (4x100m medley) and silver (4x100m freestyle) at the Kazan Universiade bettered her performance at the FINA Worlds pocketing two golds on the same distances. A bronze and a silver went to Giulio Zorzi (RSA) and to Pawel Korzeniowski (POL) respectively.

2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow (RUS)

Luis RiveraThe Kazan Universiade track and field athletes didn’t need to leave Russia as this year’s athletics championships took place in Moscow, at the legendary Luzhniki Stadium, a legacy of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. Ten Kazan Universiade medallists mounted the 2013 IAAF medal podium with the lion’s share of the medals going to Russian athletes (8: 1 gold, 2 silver & 5 bronze). A bronze also went to Luis Rivera (MEX), the golden boy of the Universiade long jump competition while Polish hammer thrower Pawel Fajdek was the only athlete pocketing a gold medal both in Kazan and in Moscow.

2013 FIE World Championships in Budapest (HUN)

32 medallists at the FIE Worlds in Budapest were medallists (or participants) at the Kazan Universiade. The majority of these fencers hailed from Russia, i.e. 17 (6 M & 11 W), followed by the Ukraine with 6 medallists (2 M & 4 W). France put 3 fencers – all men – on the podium, Romania two – both women. Furthermore, a fencer from China, Estonia, Korea, Switzerland and USA also climbed the medal podium. Some of the fencers who reached the podium in Budapest were eliminated in the rounds at the Kazan Universiade.
