Note that Sweden and Latvia will be present for the first time in an ice hockey tournament of the Winter Universiade. For Robert Philip, the hockey tournament looks wide open this year with traditionally strong teams like Russia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic as well as outsiders Canada, Ukraine and Japan. Finally in the first pool, Italy could have a beautiful role to play at home. In terms of hockey action, it will be undoubtedly the best tournament in the history of the Universiade. There will certainly be some surprises with teams like Sweden and Latvia that want to show that they did not come to make up the numbers and finally a British squad that makes its return since Torino 2007.
In the women’s tournament, the strong contenders will probably be Canada and Russia, followed by the USA and Japan. Spain and Great Britain might be lesser strong than their other opponents but surely cannot be underestimated.
