TRENTINO – The 2013 Winter Universiade Trentino commemorated the great figure of Nelson Mandela on the day of his funeral, on the field of play of all 10 competition venues.

An extract from the opening ceremony message of the President of the Italian Republic, Mr. Giorgio Napolitano, has been read today just before each competition.

In his message, Giorgio Napolitano mentioned the great figure and work made by Mandela toward peace: “As Nelson Mandela taught us sport can break down barriers, unite people and change the world. I am sure that all the people taking part at the Winter Universiade will get the meaning of this message and do all the best to build a future of peace”.

Mr. Sergio Anesi, President of the OC Trentino 2013 and Mr. Claude-Luis Gallien, FISU President have endorsed this message: “It is our duty to celebrate such a Great Man during an event like this, which is involving athletes of any race and country. These people today are excellent sportsmen and they will be the economic and political future.”

A delegation from South Africa is one of the teams taking part at the Winter Universiade.
