Kazan’s Universiade Legacy carries on

17 April 2014

KAZAN Kazan has proven its status as one of the world’s sports cities by hosting a successful 27th Summer Universiade in 2013. In fact the attribution of the Universiade kicked-off a whole string of sporting events that are bound to take place in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, i.e. the 2013 European Badminton Championships, the 2014 FIE Fencing World Championships, 2015 FINA World Championships, the FINA World Masters Championships and other high-profile sporting events such as matches of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. And now the Universiade host city was chosen to play host to yet another major sporting event. During its meeting in the Senegalese capital Dakar, the IAAF Council decided that the Russian city will be the host of the 2016 edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships. The Universiade Legacy carries on!

Indeed, just recently, Kazan was announced as the ‘Best Newcomer’ at the SportBusiness International Ultimate Sports Cities Awards which took place on 10 April, on the sidelines of the SportAccord International Convention in Belek, Turkey. The Tatarstan capital was acknowledged for its efforts in hosting the best Summer Universiade ever and planning other international sporting events. It’s not the first time that Kazan is recognised for the successful hosting of the 2013 Summer Universiade. In November 2013 the capital of Tatarstan was named the ‘Highly Recommended Sport City’ at the 2013 International Sports Event Management Awards in London (UK), the international awards for excellence in the global sports event management industry. In addition to that, the Kazan Universiade received awards in ‘The Most Innovative Event’ and ‘The Event Look’ categories. The bronze award in the Best Use of Sponsorship category went to the Partner of the Games, PricewaterhouseCoopers.
