GWANGJU – With the Gwangju Universiade being held in just over 290 days, the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC 2015) has elected a new Co-Chairman and is spurring the final preparations for the upcoming event.
On 16 September, the 5th Congress for the members of the Gwangju Universiade was held with more than 200 people in attendance, including Yoon Jang-hyun, Chairman of the GUOC, Cho Young-pyo, the Chairman of the Gwangju City Council, and other members.
On this day, Kim Hwang-sik, former Prime Minister of Korea, was elected as Co-Chairman of GUOC, after Chung Ui-hwa had stepped down from the position, and Chung Ui-hwa became an honorary chairman of GUOC.

Kim Hwang-sik, is originally from Jangseong of the South Jeolla Province and has served as the Chairman of Board of Audit and Inspection before taking on the role of Prime Minister from 2010 to 2013.
In accepting the role of Co-Chairman of GUOC, Kim commented, “With all of the various experiences from participating in the government administration, I will put forth great effort into making the Gwangju Universiade a successful event happening right here in the city of Gwangju, a place which feels like home. In order to prepare a seamless event, the government, the Gwangju city and the citizens must work strenuously together for the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade.”
Also, Chung Ui-hwa, who had to step down from Co-Chairman after being elected as Speaker for the National Assembly, was named Honorary Chairman to provide the needed support for the successful delivery of the 2015 Gwangju Universiade.
Chung Ui-hwa had worked for the hosting of the Gwangju Universiade since the beginning and played a leading role in attracting governmental support for the event and winning the bid for Gwangju as the host city for the 2015 Summer Universiade.

Also, Chung has served as Co-Chairman since the launch of the GUOC in 2010 and has worked in the forefront for the success of the Games. He has continued to show his full support for the Gwangju Universiade and do his part as honorary Chairman to attract interest nationwide and gain the governmental support needed for the success of the event.
Meanwhile, during the congress held this day, the OC gave progress reports on major issues, such as games planning, Infrastructure, marketing, games operation, cultural events, promotional campaign, international projects and more.
