2015 SU Gwangju – Update on GUOC Activities

GWANGJU – The Gwangju 2015 Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) continues the preparations towards a successful Universiade. Hereafter some of its latest activities.

GUOC 2015 Delegates visit Venues in South and North Jeolla Provinces

In order to host a successful Universiade, GUOC 2015 delegates visited Hwasun County to strengthen the cooperation for facilities usage and support for Games-time operation, and in addition inspected the Hwasun sports venues. The Gwangju Universiade badminton competitions will be held in Hwasun for the duration of 7 days from July 6th to the 12th. Events held here will include; men & women’s singles, men, women, and mixed doubles, and mixed team competitions. The competition and training venues will be hosted at the Hwasun Hanium Culture Sports Center and Hwasun Lee Yong-dae Gymnasium.

Gwangju Sparks with new Slogan

GUOC 2015 selected two slogans via a public contest, i.e. ‘The Light of Gwangju and The Dream of Youth Become One!’ and ‘Spread the World’s Dream, Gather People’s Spirit!’. The GUOC held this slogan contest on its official Korean Facebook page and received over 150 entries which then went through a preliminary round of surveys. The selected slogans will be used for the Gwangju Universiade Volunteer Recruitment Programme and Local Community Participation Programmes not only to boost interest and participation towards the Universiade. One of the main goals of the GUOC and Gwangju Metropolitan City is to raise the awareness of the local community be actively involved with the Universiade and grow into world class citizens. Meanwhile, the Official Symbol and Slogan from 2012 ‘Light Up Tomorrow’ will continue to promote the event both domestically and worldwide.

GUOC launches Doping Control Chaperone Training Programme

On November 29th at the Honam University’s Culture & Sports Center, GUOC carried out a Doping Control Training Programme for prospective chaperones. 80 prospective candidates from Honam University’s Health & Science Department participated in a training session to become chaperones. The instructors from the course were provided by the Korea Anti-Doping Agency (KADA). In order for the Gwangju 2015 Universiade to become a fair and drug-free event, the GUOC will complete the chaperone training of 150 chaperones and 80 doping control officers (DCO) by March 2015.

GUOC 2015 Partners with YOUNG SHIN F&S

On 3 December, GUOC signed a partnership agreement with YOUNG SHIN F&S as Official Sponsor in the furniture & linen category. As an official sponsor, YOUNG SHIN F&S will supply 14 items and over 24,000 units of furniture and linen in the Athletes’ Village. Meanwhile, the GUOC will allow the rights to use the Universiade Gwangju 2015 name and logo. The company developed a brand called “PLANEW” and has been sponsors for a number of international events such as the 2003 Daegu Summer Universiade, 2011 Daegu IAAF World Athletics Championships, and 2012 Yeosu World EXPO.

FISU/GUOC Young Reporters’ Programme

GUOC opened the applications to select 12 Young Reporters from Korea to be part of the FISU/GUOC Young Reporters’ Programme. As one of FISU’s Legacy Programmes, the YRP is a journalism education programme which provides young journalists around the world an opportunity to receive specialized media training during the international multi-sport event. Professional trainers and seasoned journalists will act as mentors and coaches. The programme will include a total of 24 aspiring young reporters worldwide. The GUOC will select 12 university (or graduate) students from Korea and FISU will nominate 12 university (or graduate) students from the 5 continents. In the meanwhile, FISU is already in the assessment phase of the many international applications received.
