4th WUC Weightlifting – Day 2 of Competitions

CHIANG MAI – Days seem similar in Chiang Mai at the 4th WUC Weightlifting where the first gold medal was once again won by a local lifter. Indeed in the women’s 58kg snatch competition, Srisurat ensured Thailand of a new gold with a 95kg lift ahead of Park (KOR) 83kg and Heghis (ROU) 83kg. In the clean and jerk Srisurat took another gold with a 120kg barbell, 12kg over her closest opponent Candage (USA) 108kg, the bronze going to Lugo Robles (MEX) with 107kg. The total ranking offered a new gold to Srisurat (215) silver going to Lugo Robles (189kg) and bronze to Candage (188kg). 3rd at the recent IWF World Championship, IWF Junior World Champion in 2014, Srisurat added a prestigious line to her career records with this University Title.

In the men’s 69kg a strong fight emerged from the competition between three lifters. If Kinge-Matam (FRA) took the gold in the snatch with a 146kg lift beating his personal best, ahead of Bunsuk (THA), 140kg and Kasai (JPN), 136kg, the Frenchman let the title in the clean and jerk competition to Bunsuk while silver went to Kasai and Bronze to Kinge-Matam. All three athletes ended up with the same lift (172kg) and the medals were attributed according to their bodyweight. Kinge-Matam, a silver medalist at the Kazan 2013 Universiade and participant at the London Olympics nevertheless took the gold in the total (318kg), Bunsuk taking silver (312kg) and Kasai the bronze medal for Japan (308kg).

In the women’s 63kg, Thailand saw one of its stars perform at her best, Sirikaew, silver medalist in the London Olympics and bronze medalist in the kazan Universiade – in the 58kg category – demonstrated her power winning all three gold medals with 105kg in the snatch competition, 130kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 235kg. Behind her, two times junior world champion (2012, 2014) Akhmetova (RUS) won three silver medals with 100kg in snatch, 115kg in clean and jerk and 215 in total. The podium in snatch and total was completed by Eri Mitsuke (JPN) with 92kg in snatch and a total of 197kg while Fisher (USA) took the bronze of the clean and jerk with a 108kg lift.

In the final competition of the day, spectators attended a fight between Moldova and Romania for the titles in the men’s 77kg. Captari (MDA) appeared as the strongest in this competition winning gold in snatch (155kg), clean and jerk (195kg) and total (350kg). Just behind him Alexandru Rosu (ROU) grabbed the bronze in snatch (140kg), silver in clean and jerk (176kg) and total (316kg). Lee (KOR) completed the podium in the three disciplines taking silver in snatch (143kg) and bronze in clean and jerk (172kg) and total (315kg). Captari takes his revenge after having finished third at the 2012 World University Championships.
